Directand Indirect Speech
Punctuatethe following direct speech sentences correctly and then write them as indirectspeech.
1. she asked him how can I help you?
2. he replied I want to ask you to go to the movie
3. when are yougoing to pay the rent he asked me
4. I promisedI’ll pay you soon
5. the teacherasked where are you from
6. I’m fromChina said the girl to her teacher.
7. the injuredman exclaimed no one will help me
8. don’t worry,sir, said the policeman I’ve called the ambulance
9. where is myhome asked the little boy
10. I reallydon’t know answered the lady
Directand Indirect Speech Answers
Thereis often more than one possible answer for indirect speech.
1. Sheasked him, “How can I help you?”
Sheasked him how she could help him.
2. Hereplied, “I want to ask you to go to the movie with me.”
Hereplied that he wanted to ask her to go to the movie with him.
3. “Whenare you going to pay the rent?” he asked me.
Heasked me when I was going to pay the rent.
4. I promised, “I’ll pay you soon.”
Ipromised that I would pay him soon.
5. Theteacher asked Mei Ling, “Where are you from?”
Theteacher asked Mei Ling where she was from.
6. “I’mfrom China,” the girl replied.
Thegirl replied that she was from China.
7. “Whereis my home?” asked the little boy.
Thelittle boy asked where his home was.
8. “Ireally don’t know,” answered the lady.
Thelady answered that she really didn’t know.
9. Theinjured man exclaimed, “No one will help me!”
Theinjured man exclaimed that no one would help him.
10. “Don’tworry, sir,” said the policeman. “I’ve called the ambulance.”
Thepoliceman told the man not to worry and that he had called the ambulance.
