Nerve.

Definition: A bundle of nerve fibres running to various organs and tissues of the body.

Uses: That girl's definitely got nerve (courage). Did you know she rowed across the Atlantic on her own?

You've certainly got a nerve (being rude) by saying that my handwriting is awful when nobody can read yours!

Some people use drink to steady their nerves. (calm down)

That dog's barking is beginning to get on my nerves. (irritate me)

Variations: It's quite natural to feel nervous (anxious/worried) before you take an examination/take a flight in a plane.

After he came back from the war, he had a nervous breakdown. (lost control of his mind)

If she has to put up with any more misfortunes, she'll become a nervous wreck. (unable to think straight)

Thank you, Mr. Boucherit, for this contribution.
I wish to add another meaning to "nerves", if you please.

We also use " to be on nerves ".
I was on my nerves when I had sat for the exam.
That is, to be stressed or worried about something

In this case, I have to be assured by "a shoulder" that I will surely pass that exam. Do you think that most ,not all, of those who pass(ed) that exam were on cool nerves ? May be , yes because of confidence acquired from their "boost". Don't you think so, sir?
