Wikipedia Has Killed The Encyclopedia

Long gone are the days when students are scoffed at for citing Wikipedia in their essays and papers.
While it still may not be considered the most accurate source of
information, it’s definitely the most easily accessible, and one of the
most abundant. These days, we’re all completely tied to our computers, but we’re just as information-hungry as ever, and Wikipedia is serving it up at our fingertips.
After 244 years of print, Wikipedia has forced Encyclopedia Britannica to stop the presses.
In 2005, 86% of teachers prohibited using Wikipedia as a source for
research. Now, just 73% do. Wikipedia use is increasing by 29% annually,
and in the English version alone, there are 3,881,516 articles.
Meanwhile, library use is declining by 11% annually. Eight in ten
students turn to Wikipedia as their first source of research, but only
25% of students still visit the library.

Though it is loved for it’s user cost (free) it’s operating costs are about double
that of libraries in the U.S. Any user can edit the articles, but 74%
of edits are made by a group of 1400 people, 14% of which hold Masters Degrees. Wikipedia editors generally catch errors in entries within hours, if not minutes, and more than 20 colleges
now help with content and editing. Though it’s still deemed the
people’s encyclopedia, it’s not that far off in accuracy from the
Encyclopedia Britannica and college-level
