This research study was undertaken by Mr. Abdelshafy A Abbas while he was inresidence at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst during the 1993-94 academic year. Mr. Abbas was a participant in the Egyptian Peace Fellowship Program. During his stay Mr. Abbas was unusually productive and used his time wisely. The study focused on the use of an evaluation process for the English as a Foreign Language Teaching Program in the secondary schools of Egypt and takes into consideration the General Secondary School Certificate English Examination. The study is wellorganized and carefully researched with references from the leading researchers in the field of assessment. It is obvious that a great deal of work has gone into the research. Of special interest is Mr. Abbas's concluding chapter where he offers an alternative assessment approach.
