Crossword puzzles are said to be the most popular and widespread game in the world, but have a short history. The first crosswords appeared in England in the 19^th century. They were printed in children’s books and different periodicals. However, modern crosswords were born in the USA at the beginning of the 20^th century and became an adult’s pastime.
The journalist Arthur Wynne invented and published the first crossword grid on December 21^st,1913 in the New York World newspaper and he named it a “word-cross” puzzle.
